Superfoods Behind 8th Wonder Tea | Powerful Superfood Teas

maximios / Drinks /

At 8th Wonder Tea, we provide ready-to-drink teas that are packed with superfood extracts to power your body and mind.

But what are superfoods, and why are they important to include in your diet?

Superfoods Behind 8th Wonder Tea

The most basic definition of a superfood is “a food that is rich in compounds, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients considered beneficial to a person’s health.”

Most fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, herbs, and meats are nutritious, but superfoods are extremely nutritious.

They are preferred because they help you attain a better overall well-being for the same volume of food consumed when compared to other foods. For example, eating one cup of blueberries is more healthful than eating one cup of pears.

Nutrient-dense superfoods

Nutrient-dense superfoods are used as medicine in certain cultures, or to simply enhance overall performance in life.

Some research claims they also offer specific health benefits such as helping you maintain a healthy heart, slowing down aging, enhancing your immune system, and preventing diseases such as osteoporosis, certain cancers, diabetes, and respiratory infections.

Our four tea blends combine one or more of the following superfoods to give your body and mind the wellness benefits they need.

All Four Tea Blends

Green and Black Tea

Prevent the hardening of the arteries according to researchers at the University of Scranton, but the main superhero here is Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.  EGCG is a phytochemical that slows irregular cell growth, which could potentially help prevent the growth of some cancers.

Lemons

Are rich in Vitamin C and are best for aiding one’s digestion, shedding off pounds, and even boosting one’s energy. It can also treat internal bleeding because of its antiseptic and coagulant properties.

Ashwagandha Chai

Apples

Contain quercetin, an antioxidant that may reduce your risk of lung cancer, and are a great low-calorie source. Eating apples has been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, diabetes, and asthma.

Ashwagandha

Known as “Indian ginseng,” has been widely used to boost immunity of our body, lower cholesterol, restore energy, increase stamina and endurance, and reduce anxiety and depression.

The natural antioxidants, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Beta-carotene have been thought to effectively inhibit the mental effects caused by aging and Alzheimer’s disease.

Ginseng Green

Ginger

Has been used for years as a delicious flavoring and an all-natural remedy for everything from an upset stomach to unwanted inflammation. This is just one of the reasons why it makes a great companion with lemon.

Ginseng

An adaptogen which aids the body in dealing with physical, chemical and biological stress; it also regulates the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system and the endocrine system.

Passion Fruit

Is believed to help alleviate the symptoms of osteoporosis and even improve respiratory conditions, such as asthma. The super-fruit also boasts cancer-preventing properties and is an excellent source of vitamins, especially vitamin C and A.

Rooibos Red

Rooibos

Is an herb native to South Africa that is believed to soothe stomach cramps and relieve the pain of infants suffering from colic. The high level of antioxidants strengthen the immune system to fight against future illness.

Yerba Mate Cayenne

Bananas

Contain significant amounts of vitamins C and B6, are rich in carotenoids, and can increase vitamin A levels in those with deficiencies . The average banana also contains 3 grams of fiber, which helps keep us full and fend off the munchies.

Cayenne Pepper

Contains capsaicin, which is known for its pain-relief and decongestion properties as well as its ability to lower your risk of heart attack and ulcers.

The spicy kick improves your metabolism by increasing heat production and oxygen consumption for up to 20 minutes after eaten, and almost 50% of your daily immunity-boosting vitamin A quota is contained in a single, small pepper.

Wake Up Tea Industry! Superfoods Have Arrived. – 8th Wonder Tea

maximios / Drinks /

What is there to say about 8th Wonder Tea and the product I have worked to bring to fruition and optimal taste in the last year? In spite of the millions of minor details that are of no interest or consequence to the reader, it boils down to one thing: we at 8th Wonder love tea. We wholeheartedly believe in the power of nutritionally dense superfoods and we wanted to create something healthy that didn’t taste like we were trying to create something healthy.

With this sentiment in mind and zero experience, we set out to craft a premium tea the quality and uniqueness of which had never been seen on Planet Earth.

Pretentious? Lofty? Perhaps. But in our collective mind, you either go big or you go home. Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. Although store shelves were stocked to the brim with organic ready to drink beverages we just felt like the category had not reached its maximum potential. In our home base of Colorado, you often hear such curious colloquialisms as “Dude, that’s the dank” or “Yeah man, it’s the dankest.” At 8th Wonder we wanted to leave no room for doubts. In a sea of natural products extolling infinite virtues, we wanted to be the ultra dankest on taste, sustainability, ethics, and creativity alone. Self-evident superiority as we are fond of saying. As a brand that aims to entice the adventurous and free spirited, we took matters into our own hands to achieve this very aim. Thus, the road for 8th Wonder was paved and we hope you’ll continue to walk it with us.

Growing up in the burbs with urban sprawl and big box stores blocking out the sun, Dan and I were forced to cultivate the kind of wanderlust and imagination that is intentionally imputed into the taste and direction of our flavors. Without merely capitalizing on buzzwords in the superfood category, we hope to bring these ingredients to life by steeping our teas, literally, in their heritages, stories, and environments which make our third orb from the sun such a cosmic treasure trove.

We donate 1% of all sales to Water.Org through our 1% for the Planet affiliation because you know, we live on a finite planet and the moon doesn’t seem that great. Anyway, we hope you enjoy and can feel positive about sipping some truly health charged, organic, and dare I say, bad ass tea. Stay hydrated. Stay Happy. Recycle. Compost. Love your brother (and sister).

Drink up champs, you’re going places!

Meet The Teamaker Behind 8th Wonder — a Q&A with Parker Rush – 8th Wonder Tea

maximios / Drinks /

Meet our founder Parker in this quick Q&A.

The 8th Wonder Tea mission is to “create earth-conscious teas that deliver the extensive benefits of organic, superfood ingredients to power your body and mind.” Your teas are 100% organic and gluten-free, and offer a daily dose of Vitamin C and antioxidants. How did you become interested in healthy food?

“I always had an affinity for healthy eating and healthy lifestyle. I went to St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, a city known for being healthy, and really took an interest in natural foods. Once I graduated, I moved to Boulder, where everyone seems to be on the same page with healthy lifestyle. Everyone was active, loved to be outside and ate healthfully. I felt right at home, and the culture rubbed off on me even more.

My first job out of college was working at Alfalfa’s Market in Boulder — the job wasn’t really for me in the end, but I did learn a lot about the health food industry. I’ve always wanted to do something entrepreneurial, but Alfalfa’s taught me a lot about what I could do to shake things up in the beverage space.”

Why a teamaker, then?

“Well, I majored in philosophy and environmental science, so I was bound to be an entrepreneur, since my degree isn’t exactly applicable in the real world. But, kidding aside, I knew I wanted to create a tangible product that impacted the food and beverage industry, and I was passionate about tea. It was a natural choice.

The beverage industry is interesting. A lot of fads come and go, and although some (like kombucha, for example) have staying power, most fade away. Tea drinking is centuries old, and I do believe it will always have devoted followers.”

So, you decided on tea. Then what?

“Well, at the time, I had no experience making tea, just drinking it. So I started some wild science experiments in a crockpot in my apartment. Some were fine at first, others were horrible. Sometimes there were lingering smells for days.

My upstairs neighbor (literally) got a whiff of what I was doing, and it turned out that he had experience in the beverage industry. He started helping out right away. Over three months, the experimentation became more of a process, and eventually, I landed on something phenomenal.”

The next thing to figure out was, ‘How do I go from just messing around in my kitchen, to selling this?’

Then, I found Flavor Man — these flavor architect/chemists out of Louisville, Kentucky. They’ve consulted on tons of beverage projects — from sports drinks and liquor to tea and coffee. I sent them the product, and every two weeks I would get samples in the mail. It was definitely a process — each tea’s had more than 35 iterations. They did blind test studies with employees until they had an 85% approval rating across the board.”

When did you know you had something truly outstanding?

“Well two things, the market and product were finally right. You know, for the first time ever, organic products are becoming for everyone, not just tree huggers in Boulder and Denver like me. It’s becoming more difficult to be ignorant about eating crap. The trend is becoming less of a fad and more of a stable way of life. People are looking for more products like this.

And, the product was ready. So, we started competing for investor money and exposure. In December, we tried to get into BevNet in New York City and Santa Monica. We sent a video in before we even had a completed label, but we were selected out of 15 people as a promising new beverage trend in the new beverage showdown.

We did pretty well — our flavors were unique. People told us it’s something that’s never been done before with green tea or black tea. We were in there with some big names — Starbucks, Bulletproof and Stumptown. It was a surreal and very exciting experience.”

Why bottled tea? Why not a loose leaf or something else?

“Well, pre-brewed and bottled is convenient for the consumer, but that’s not why we did it. We did it to redefine the tea drinking experience.

Tea’s not really for young people — not many of us are sitting down at 4 p.m. for high tea every afternoon. I don’t want tea to be this antique thing that only grandma drinks. We thought about the tradition that surrounds tea drinking, and we decided to turn it on its head. 8th Wonder isn’t your typical tea party. This is tea on-the-go, for the active person. Maybe for those looking to have a “tea party” by popping open a bottle on top of a mountain with friends.

Basically, we wanted to rebel against things that don’t make sense to us.”

On a mountain, eh? Is that what do you like to do when you aren’t working?

“I just love being outside. Hiking, cycling, snowboarding. Why can’t I have teatime while enjoying the outdoors, you know? But, when I am inside, I’m usually hanging with my cats Jasper and Pippa or blowing all of my money on vinyl records.”

Nothing expresses the flavors of Argentina quite like Yerba Mate, except maybe the Pisco Sour. In this rendition, we are substituting the pisco for a lemon infused gin from Italy, and adding a little pear. The result is a silky smooth but surprisingly light, bright drink that’s worthy of a weekly ritual.

The ingredients of this cocktail can change depending on what’s fresh at your local market. Feel free to experiment with different types of seasonal citrus and melons. Cantaloupe is our personal favorite, which is why we used it to create this inviting drink.
